2010 Shortlists
The 2010 Annual Freedom of Expression Awards, presented in association with the Guardian, Sage, the Economist Group and Bindmans LLP, honour those who have furthered the cause of freedom of expression and battled censorship around the world.
Prizes are awarded in five categories: publishing, music, journalism, new media, and law and campaigning.

Those shortlisted for the Bindmans Law and Campaigning Award in 2010 were:
Rashid Hajili is the chair of the Media Rights Institute in Azerbaijan, which works for the protection of journalists, bloggers and also for the reform of Azerbaijani media laws.
Netsanet Demissie co-founded the Organization for Social Justice in Ethiopia to foster democracy through education, policy-making and advocacy work, acting as its Chief Executive. Daniel Bekele joined ActionAid Ethiopia as head of policy, research and advocacy in 2004. He had previously worked as a lawyer and practiced throughout the Ethiopian court system, playing an active role in the Ethiopian Bar Association and the Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association.
Memorial Human Rights Centre is a Russian human rights group that monitors and highlights human rights violations. It follows criminal cases to help bring them to court, compiles lists of missing people, and monitors and documents crimes that take place in Russia, including investigating kidnappings and disappearances.
Charter 97 is a campaign movement established in Belarus, based on the Charter 77 group set up in Communist Czechoslovakia. As with the Czechoslovak group, Charter 97 dedicates itself to the principles of “independence, freedom and democracy and respect for human rights”.
